Sally James is a dedicated, passionate yet approachable gastroenterologist.
She has a special interest in inflammatory bowel diseases, functional gut disorders, women’s health, and health promotion. Sally’s experience is extensive and encompasses acute care, the management of complex chronic illness and the promotion of good health and wellbeing through screening and surveillance.
After graduation from University of Melbourne, Sally undertook physician training through St Vincent’s Hospital, Melbourne, followed by Advanced Training in gastroenterology at Concord Hospital Sydney. She concluded her Gastroenterology training combined with doctoral studies through Monash Health at Box Hill Hospital. She now works predominantly in private practice, and has a permanent presence in the Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders Clinic, Alfred Health.
These positions in tertiary and quaternary referral centres have enabled extensive experience in all areas of complex gastroenterology and hepatology.
For GPs
Sally James practises in the inner east of Melbourne and will accommodate complex chronic illness as well as acute patients. Waiting times are short and can be managed safely and efficiently either through the Epworth Health care services in Richmond or Box Hill. Emergency issues can be triaged through local public services as needed.

Although she specialises in complex inflammatory bowel disease, she equally enjoys the relationships involved with managing common gastroenterological and lifestyle related issues. Sally is keen to help manage in a holistic way, common conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome, fatty liver disease and the metabolic syndrome, coeliac disease and gastro-oesophageal reflux disease. She also stays up to date with the more complex overlap conditions involving disordered eating, psychology and neurodiversity, hypermobility and dysautonomia.
